Camp Helping Hands With CEO Meredith Madnick

Camp Helping Hands is Southern California’s premier service-learning summer camp for young children.

Camp Helping Hands teaches young children ages 6-14 how they can make a difference in their community and have fun doing it. By way of service-learning projects and field trips, Camp Helping Hands leaves participants with a positive and lasting impression by having them work together to help make a difference in their community where it is needed most.

Located in Northridge and Thousand Oaks, these summer camps teach children how they can make a difference in their community and have fun doing it! Through weekly service field trips, onsite partner presentations, hands-on service projects, and reflection activities, children develop compassion by giving back and making a positive impact in their community.

The Camp Program Overview is from July 9-August 3

Camp Helping Hands is a four-week program that provides fun and educational service-learning opportunities within several different segments of our community. Each summer program has an overarching theme, and each week of programming supports that theme. For CHH campers to receive the full benefits of service-learning, it is important to embrace this four-week approach, though one, two, and three-week options are available. In addition to each week’s service projects and field trips, CHH campers also swim, play sports activities and games, sing songs, do arts and craft projects, and much more.

Age Groups range from 6-14 years old.

CHH places campers according to age into four age groups: Junior Helpers (6 and 7), Young Advocates (8 and 9), Super Agents (10 and 11), and Chief Aides (12 through 14*). Each group contains 15 to 17 campers and is led by two counselors and one counselor-in-training who guide them through age-appropriate activities. Chief Aides, our oldest age group, are Jr. counselors-in-training (Jr. CIT’s). In addition to participating in camp activities like our younger campers, they assist team counselors and camp administration with tasks as needed.

*Campers 14 years of age entering their freshman year in high school can also participate in the Jr. CIT program.

CAMPERS WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO:

  • develop empathy and feel socially responsible.

  • gain increased self-esteem and self-knowledge.

  • make a positive difference in the lives of others, their community and themselves.

  • understand that we are all fundamentally the same regardless of race, religion, ability or status.

  • gain critical thinking and inquiry skills as issues are examined.

  • learn to collaborate and trust in one another.

  • strengthen community ties as they work toward common goals.

  • improve communication, problem-solving, and social skills.

  • learn that one person can make a difference.

  • develop leadership skills that will continue to serve them and their communities for a lifetime.
