Equal Means Equal is a documentary by award winning director, actress and activist Kamala Lopez. The documentary focuses on issues within the Constitution regarding gender discrimination. Lopez is also the President of Heroica Films.
Lopez believes that the addition of a gender equality clause to the United States Constitution is necessary to even begin to level the playing field between men and women. She stresses how heavily women, girls and families are all affected by this clause.
The Equal Means Equal initiative demands that we ratify the Equal Rights Amendment and educate individuals on the role that it plays in our society every day.
Their website states, "In 1776, our nation declared that all men are created equal and are endowed with inalienable rights, leaving women to fight for equal treatment under the law... It’s time the Constitution acknowledged women’s rights as citizens of this country. The Equal Rights Amendment will set a precedent that guarantees equality, justice, and respect for all people under the law."
Only two more states are needed to pass the Equal Rights Amendment, and Lopez is determined to spread her message and make it a reality.
Her message is resonating with others and gaining plenty of recognition. She joined the Equal Pay Platform of Champions, was named one of the 21 Leaders of the 21st Century by Women's eNews, was named a Champion of Justice by the National Civil Rights Group, Equal Rights Advocates and more.
Lopez's documentary about gender disrimination is a New York Times Critics' Pick, and won Michael Moore's TCFF award for Best U.S. Documentary in 2016.
