THE 22ndANNUAL L.A. CANCER CHALLENGE 5K WALK/RUN CHARITY RACE KICKS-OFF THE HALLOWEEN SEASON
Benefiting Pancreatic Cancer Research, One of Southern California’s Longest-Running Charity Races will Host a Free Fit and Family Expo with Fun, Halloween Activities and a Whimsical, Life-Size Candyland Kids Zone
WHAT: More than 2,000 runners and walkers dressed in fun, festive costumes are expected to kick-off the Halloween season by raising awareness about pancreatic cancer at the 22ndAnnual L.A. Cancer Challenge (LACC) 5K Walk/Run.Sponsored and produced by theHirshberg Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research for more than two decades, the Halloween-themed fundraiser will be held on the beautiful UCLA campus where key research is performed at the foundation’s laboratories.
Registration is still open for participants to walk or run the 5K course to show unity in finding a cure for a disease that has the highest mortality rate of all major cancers and is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S., surpassing breast cancer. Virtual runners and walkers who are unable to attend can also participate in their neighborhood or at any location. They can walk or run at their own pace with friends, family or solo.
Individuals, teams and kids are invited to sign-up for the 5K fitness fundraiser. Adult registration includes chip timed event, T-shirt, bib and finisher’s medal, and youth 11 and under will receive an event T-shirt, bib and finisher’s medal.Proceeds from the LACC will benefit the Hirshberg Foundation’s philanthropic efforts to advancing pancreatic cancer research and providing information, resources and support to pancreatic cancer patients and their families.To date, the LACC has raised more than $8.3 million dollars for pancreatic cancer research.
The entire family is invited to attend the LACC which includes a Fit Family Expo featuring a wide variety of Los Angeles’ top vendors, Halloween festivities, celebrities, live course entertainment, raffle prizes, silent auction and more.The LACC will be offering kids of all ages a magical and whimsical experience with theCandyland Kids Zonewith life-size décor including colorful lollipops and gum drops as well as bounce houses and fun Halloween activities.

QUICK FACTS ABOUT PANCREATIC CANCER:
- In 2019 an estimated 56,770 Americans will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the U.S., and more than 45,750 will die from the disease.
- Pancreatic cancer is expected to become the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in 2020, surpassing colorectal cancer.
- Few risk factors for developing pancreatic cancer are: Cigarette smoking; family history of pancreatic cancer; chronic pancreatitis; alcohol use; obesity and diabetes. Individuals with Lynch syndrome and certain other genetic syndromes, as well as BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers are also at increased risk.
