IRS To Delay Tax Deadlines To Mid-May After Chaotic Past Year

The IRS is planning to delay the April 15th tax filing deadline by about a month, giving taxpayers additional time to file returns and pay any outstanding levies.

As of right now, the IRS is figuring out what the final deadline will be. The agency is currently setting the filing deadline to either May 15th or May 17th, but there is still no official date. May 15th falls on a Saturday and the IRS delays filing deadlines that fall on a weekend or holiday to the next business day.

The filing extension would then give taxpayers additional breathing room to meet their tax obligations. Besides the changes from the pandemic, the changes in tax law will mean that some tax filers will have to wait for updated forms, resubmit their returns, and some will need to consult a tax adviser.
