In Indianola, Iowa, Santa isn't using his sleigh this year; instead, he's spreading festive cheer by decorating every home on his street for the holidays.
At 74, John Reichart has a deep love for Christmas, but his greatest passion is his wife of 53 years, Joan. Four years ago, Joan was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, and since then, John, a Marine veteran, has dedicated himself to creating lasting memories for her.
Today, a lot of helping hands have joined his effort, assisting with the setup of lights, decorations, and more. A continuous flow of onlookers has been visiting to enjoy the festive decorations.
"If it wasn't for my wife, I don't know if I would've done it," Reichart said. "But she wanted Christmas, so I'd give it to her. I'd do anything to make her happy."
Reichart shared that he can't imagine ending this tradition anytime soon.
"I think the whole neighborhood feels very blessed to have him in this neighborhood," one neighbor said.
Joan mentioned that she's cherished the festive atmosphere her husband has brought to the community.
"I didn't know what to think," Joan said. "But I'm glad he did it. I love him."
In appreciation of Reichart and to honor Joan, their neighbors have set up a P.O. box to collect Christmas cards. The neighbors plan to hand the cards to Reichart, who will read them aloud to his wife.
