Summer is a senior at Hickory Ridge High School in Harrisburg, North Carolina, she's been an honor student all her life, but was recently suspended for going against dress code. The school argues the shirt she wore showed her shoulders and exposed her back. The principal asked her to put on a jacket, and even though Summer obliged by the rules, later on the principal said she needed to changer her whole outfit.
Instead of changing clothes, Summer wanted to call her mother first before further action proceeded. However, when Summer's mother couldn't be reached, Summer went about her school day. During a school assembly later that day the principal excused everyone except for Summer.
Summer told NBC Charlotte, “I’m gonna give you an ultimatum. We have tried to call your mother. You either come with me to the control room to change your shirt or we will arrest you.”
Thankfully Summer's mother called before anything escalated further. Yahoo reported Summer was a given a 10-day suspension along with being forbidden to participate in senior activities which included graduation. A letter given to Summer's mom read she was suspended for “insubordination.”
Summer talked about the situation with disappointment, “It’s just sad because I worked so hard for four years to walk across that stage. “We have drug dealers walking across that stage, we have sex offenders walking across that stage and then the 4.4 student who showed her shoulders can’t” (via NBC Charlotte).
