West Nile Virus Has Spiked Activity In San Fernando Valley

Of the 22 people who tested positive for the West Nile Virus in Los Angeles, nearly 50% of them are from the San Fernando Valley. The valley has had a spike in activity for the virus, last week 49 mosquitoes were found carrying the disease, according to the Los Angeles Daily news.

The residents infected with the virus were from Arcadia, Bellflower, Canoga Park, Palmdale and Winnetka. No one has died of the 22 infected, however, 19 had to be hospitalized.

Unfortunately there is not a vaccine or treatment for the West Nile Virus, but residents can take precautions by using DEET as an insect repellent, staying inside during dawn and dusk (the time when mosquitoes are most likely to bite), and getting rid of any source that has standing water.
