Given the recent wildfires in California, we all know the damage and terror that occurs when someone drops a lit cigarette in the forest or forgets to put out their campfire. Here are some quick wildfire prevention tips that only take 5 minutes to accomplish yet can save lifelong damage.
1. Look at campground and home fire safety. Campgrounds will often say if campfires are permitted in area, and if they are- there are will fire pit where the fire must go. Same applies to outdoor home fires. Fires should be in a contained area and a minimum of 15 feet away from any buildings or trees.
2. Fires regulations: Fires should...
- be no taller than 2 feet
- must be AT LEAST 10 feet away from any buildings or trees
- be in a designated fire pit
- be put out with water or dirt until all embers are gone
3. Keep an eye on the fire. It's normal to want a long lasting fire, but once everyone goes to bed or leaves your backyard, fires are often forgotten. Always keep someone, along with a shovel or bucket of water next to the fire in case the wind shifts.
4. Put out your fire COMPLETELY. Let your fire burn out- down to the ashes, then pour some water over the embers.Use the shovel to mix the water into the dirt. Put your hand close to the edge of the fire pit. If its still warm dump some more water and mix the water with the dirt. Remember "if its too hot to touch, its too hot to leave."
