Selena's memory lives on through her loyal fans, music and now a star in Hollywood on the Walk of Fame. La Reina de Musica Tejano (The Queen of Tejano Music) will be commemorated with a star in front of the Capitol Records building.
To celebrate, here 5 things you may not have known about Selena.
1. She dropped out of middle school to so she can help financially support her family. Selena started singing at the age of 6 and would perform with her siblings in her family's restaurant in Corpus Christi, Texas. They were known as Selena y Los Dinos. After their restaurant went under, the Quintanilla's lost their home and began touring with their kids; performing at carnivals, restaurants, and weddings, whatever they can to make ends meet.
2. She couldn't speak fluent Spanish. Selena was born and raised in Texas where the dominant language was English. Selena learned her songs phonetically, but when her career began to rise her father, Abraham, encouraged her to take Spanish speaking classes to improve her fluency.
3. The MAC Selena collaboration was started by KIIS FM's very own Patty Rodriguez. Rodriguez started a petition for MAC to pay tribute to Selena Quintanilla Perez. 37,000 people signed and MAC agreed to the petition. In an interview with Remezcla Rodriguez says, "It was long overdue. Selena is an American icon. She is the epitome of the American woman today. Having a brand like MAC recognize is proof of that. This is a huge testament of the power of the Latina consumer. We have a voice and it’s loud and clear. Other brands should take notice of what just happened here."
4. Selena designed all of her outfits, especially the legendary purple jumpsuit she wore at her last concert at the Houston Astrodome in 1995. Suzette Quintanilla, Selena's older sister, tells Entertainment Weekly, "It was done tastefully. She was very cautious of the fact that she didn't want it to open or have something pop out," Suzette admitted. "She loved it, she felt very free [performing in it]."
5. At the time of her death, People magazine published an issue dedicated to Selena and the magazine sold over 1,000,000 copies on its release day. Due to the increase in sales for the issue, People created People en Español, now the highest selling Spanish magazine in the world.
Selena ceremony on the Hollywood Walk of Fame will be held on November 3 at 6:30PM in front of the Capitol Records building on 1750 Vine Street in Hollywood. Eva Longoria and Mayor Eric Garcetti will be there to announce November 3rd as Selena Day in Los Angeles.
