Hilary Duff has released a statement following the turmoil surrounding the much anticipated reboot, Lizzie McGuire. The series was announced last year during Disney's d23 convention and provided a huge advantage for Disney + to pull in a nostalgic, as well as a new, fanbase. Unfortunately, Duff and showrunner Terri Minsky saw the show performing to a more mature vibe as Lizzie would now be a 30-year-old woman living in New York City.
“I’d be doing a disservice to everyone by limiting the realities of a 30 year old’s journey to live under the ceiling of a PG rating,” Duff wrote onInstagram. “It’s important to me that just as her experiences as a preteen/teenager navigating life were authentic, her next chapters are equally as real and relatable. It would be a dream if Disney would let us move the show toHulu, if they were interested, and I could bring this beloved character to life again.”
After filming two episodes of the reboot, Minsky has now left the series due to creative differences.
"I am so proud of the two episodes we did," Minsky said during an interview with Variety. "Hilary has a grasp of Lizzie McGuire at 30 that needs to be seen. It's a wonderful thing to watch."
"I would love the show to exist," she continued. "But ideally I would love it if it could be given that treatment of going to Hulu and doing the show that we were doing. That's the part where I am completely in the dark. It’s important to me that this show was important to people. I felt like I wanted to do a show that was worthy of that kind of devotion."
Earlier this week, Hilary posted a message to her Instagram story in regards to a show being deemed too mature for Disney Plus and not "family-friendly."
That show, "Love, Victor," was moved to Hulu which is Hilary's wish for Lizzie Mcguire.
