The Position You Sleep In May Be Causing Wrinkles

Getting enough sleep is important for so many reasons, but did you know that the way you sleep makes a difference, too? The position you sleep in can actually affect how your skin looks!

A board-certified facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Konstantin Vasyukevich shared that when your body is in a horizontal position for hours straight, the balance of fluid distribution shifts to the upper body, making your face and eyes puffy in the morning.

Here’s how the doctor ranks three common sleeping positions:

  • Sleeping on your side: Can lead to wrinkles on the side of your face, neck, and chest. A silk or satin pillowcase can help minimize the wrinkles.
  • Sleeping on your stomach: This is the worst position for your skin! Your skin being pushed against the pillow can cause face swelling and puffy eyes, reinforce frown lines around the eyes and lips, and accelerate the formation of permanent fine lines on the forehead.
  • Sleeping on your back: This is the best way to prolong that youthful skin look! Your face has no pressure against a pillow so there’s no wrinkle or puffy eyes!
