According to the CDC they changed the wording on their website to emphasize that COVID-19 is not easily spread through contact with contaminated surfaces.
There was no public announcement of this change and there was no specific reason for the update along with no new data about the virus on surfaces is very infectious. According to Kristen Nordlund who is a CDC spokesperson, she stated the change was meant to "clarify other types of spread beyond person to person."
If you missed the new headline, it read: "It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes. This is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads, but we are still learning more about this virus."
