Winner Of Historic Powerball Jackpot Identified; Splits Prize With Mom

A man who was identified as the winner of last Saturday's (April 26) $167.3 Powerball drawing, the state's largest Powerball jackpot in history, said he plans to split his winnings with his mother, WKYT reports.

James Shannon Farthing purchased the winning Powerball ticket at Clark's Pump N Shop in Georgetown, a store he frequents and said he was informed about his winnings from his mother.

“I come in here all the time,” Farthing said “I’m always buying [lottery tickets] ‘cause I’m like ‘somebody’s gotta win.’”

Grizzle said she called her son with news and they both returned to Clark's Pump N Shop to show their winning ticket.

“I would have never dreamed it; it hasn’t sunken in yet,” Grizzle said via the Kentucky Lottery.

The mother-son duo will have the option to take the $167.3 million payout in annual installments for more than 30 years or a one-time lump sum of $77.3 million and are currently working with a financial advisor to determine the best option. Farthing confirmed that, despite paying for the ticket himself, he planned to split his grand prize with his mother, which they both intend to use to pay off some bills.

“It’s going to be a good Mother’s Day,” Grizzle said via WKYT. “This is going to pay off my debt.”

Saturday's (May 3) Powerball jackpot will be worth an estimated $44 million after zero players matched all six numbers during the $30 million drawing Wednesday (April 30) night.
