Dodgers Fan Launches Vin Scully Bobblehead Into Space

Vin Scully Bobblehead launched into Space

It's time for Dodger baseball! (In space).

Fun things can happen when baseball fans get bored and since spring training is still a few weeks away, one Dodger fan decided to pass the time by honoring one of the best broadcasters in sports, Vin Scully, by launching his bobblehead into the stratosphere

Keith Plocek says they attached a GoPro Session and various iPhones to a weather balloon and parachute on a cloudy January day. Plocek and his buddies launched the famed Dodgers announcer from a little league field in Palmdale. Two hours later, they retrieved it from a yard twenty-miles away in Lake Los Angeles thanks to a Spot Trace GPS tracker they included in the package.

Plocek estimated that Vin made it anywhere between 60,000 and 100,000 feet above the ground.

One bit of sad news, the Vin Scully bobblehead didn't make it out of its adventure completely unscathed. Plocek said Vin's legs broke off on impact, but that it wouldn't be difficult to glue them back on. After all, Plocek jokes, a few injured legs never stopped Kirk Gibson.

The camera wasn't able to capture much of Vin's descent because the cameras on the rig had frozen up in the cold. Plocek says he'll include handwarmers for Vin's next sky-high adventure.

Scully is best known for his 67 seasons calling games for the Los Angeles Dodgers, stretching back to 1950 when the franchise was still located in Brooklyn. Scully also holds the record for the longest tenure of any broadcaster with a single team in sports.
