What began as a loss, ended up being a win. A double win.
An Australian couple miraculously bought two lottery tickets in one week and won twice.
“It’s actually a funny story as to why we ended up with the same entry twice,” the anonymous lotto winner told The Lot after confirming his double jackpot, News.com.au reported.
Apparently, the man’s wife was angry at him after he forgot to buy her lucky ticket numbers last week.
To make up for this, he bought his wife’s preferred numbers twice at two different newsstands located in their area of Dapto.
Not only was the husband forgiven for buying the correct numbers, but he also actually won the lottery with the same numbers that his wife’s been playing for three decades. And not only once, but twice.
“This morning she kept crossing off number after number on her ticket, and once we realized we’d won $1 million [roughly $668,000 USD] on one ticket, I thought I should probably tell her about the second identical ticket too,” recalled the newly-minted multimillionaire.
It’s unknown what the odds of winning the Australian lotto twice is, but experts believe that the odds of buying just one winning ticket are one in 1.845 million.
“I can’t believe this has happened to us,” said the man over his double-stroke of good luck.
Unlike many lotto winners who splurge on material things, the couple plans to spend their winnings wisely.
“My mind is racing with all the things I can do for my family,” said the woman. “I can buy my daughter a house. I can set up the children and grandchildren for the future.”
Any leftover money from the winnings will go toward a vacation.
It’s not the first time someone has won twice on lottery tickets in a short time span. A 70-year-old woman from Delaware won a six-figure lottery prize from separate scratch-off tickets back in October, 2022.
