Abandoned Dog At NYC Subway Gets Adopted

Social media makes it easy to do and get a lot of things... for free. Even dogs.

There are virtual communities such as "Buy Nothing" groups on Facebook and "NYC Free at the Curb" on Instagram that serve a similar purpose, and that is to give unwanted items away.

These sites are normally used to get rid of things like used furniture, old TVs, already-read books, but on Monday one woman found an unlikely buddy on the NYC Free at the Curb Instagram page.

"I found my coffee table; I found my couch that I was sitting on when I saw this dog. I found so much on this page, so this is my craziest stoop find yet," Heather Hamm said.

Hamm had been wanting to get a dog for a while now. Then she saw someone post a photo of a sad and abandoned pit bull mix who was tied with a rope in a subway station. She took that as a sign and went to go see the dog right away.

She hopped in a Lyft to the Fulton Street Station, where she saw police officers standing with the dog.

"I was just like, 'Can I have her?' And they were like, 'She's your dog now, she obviously likes you,'" Hamm said.

Hamm got her dog and named her newfound pup.

"I called her Peaches, and she responded. So, I kind of think that's already her name," she said.

The person who left Peaches at the subway is still a mystery.

There are plenty of cameras surrounding the Financial District and down in the subway station, but there were none in the stairwell where she was found.

Hamm took Peaches to the vet, where no microchip was found. It was estimated that Peaches was between six and nine months old.

Less than 24 hours after Peaches’ photo was posted on Instagram, she got a clean bill of health from the vet, a new pink harness, and a new home.

"I opened up Instagram and I saw her. She was the first post on there. And I was like, there she is," Hamm said.
