Man Creates Memorial For 9/11 Victims On His Lawn in Fullerton

An Orange County man has created a massive memorial to honor the victims of 9/11.

Joann Anderson sees a flag bearing her mother's name, Barbara Keating.

"It's such an honor to have her flag here," Anderson said.

The 72-year-old retiree was flying back to California on Sept. 11, 2001 when she died on Flight 11. She is among the thousands of victims named and displayed in Scott Townley's tribute to them.

Townley who is a Fire Authority Firefighter, turns his front yard in Fullerton into a memorial every anniversary. It began with one sign and some flags, just days following the attacks. Almost two decades later, it's grown to include thousands of flags and wooden crosses.

Townley made each one of them to remember each life lost.

"It's my personal tribute to what happened on 9/11," he said. "I get emotional. It was hard to build the crosses because it was every firefighter."

In an octagon, Townley displayed the faces of the tragedy - all 3,300 of them which took him more than three years of trips to New York to research and locate copies of photos.

"Sitting here one night, I was putting the lights up and I was like oh my God, all these people are gone," he said as his voice broke with emotion.

Townley added more lost lives since 9/11 and hope people come visit the memorial.

"They can walk around. They can read the plaques - it tells them exactly what they're looking at, exactly what happened, and they can see the impact that every single flag was a person," he said.
