White Furry Dog Gets Attention from Butterflies in Peruvian Jungle

A Terrier mix with prominent white fur had a unique experience in the Peruvian jungle exploring the lush lowlands of Madre de Dios with his family—including his brown-furred doggy sibling, Calvin. However, it is Polar the terrier mix, who becomes the center of attention. But it is not the locals or fellow hikers who are fascinated by him; it’s the monarch butterflies that are.

Whenever Polar ventures into the jungle, the monarch butterflies, drawn to his snow-white coat, swarm around him in a beautiful colorful dance. They flutter excitedly when they spot him by landing delicately on his back and neck. The orange and black of their wings stand out against his fur and while their perches are short-lived because Polar quickly shakes them off. It doesn’t take long for the butterflies to return, repeating the cycle throughout his walk.

TikTok user Abychan12 documented this charming phenomenon in several videos, which quickly sparked curiosity among viewers. One user, @karlysol3 (Karly Sol), offered a possible explanation for the butterflies’ behavior: “Butterflies perch on white surfaces. If you ever go to see monarch butterflies in Michoacán, [Mexico], wear white, and you’ll see.” Abichan highlighted the comment, agreeing with the theory and providing Calvin as proof. Unlike Polar, Calvin, with his brown fur, remains entirely unbothered by the butterflies.
Out of their hiking group, Polar remains the sole recipient of the butterflies’ affection. While he doesn’t particularly enjoy being blanketed by his fluttering friends, his unique connection to the monarchs has earned him a lighthearted title: “Polar, guardian of the butterflies,” as Abichan fondly wrote.

Polar may not fully appreciate his special bond with the monarch butterflies, but his jungle adventures have turned into something truly magical. Every walk is a reminder of how nature finds beauty and connection in its own way.
