A powerful video released by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department highlights the bravery of Deputies Nicholas Martinez and Quinn Alkonis, who rescued a 100-year-old woman during the Eaton Fire. The deputies were part of a search team sent to MonteCedro Retirement Community as the fire approached. Amidst the smoke and chaos, the deputies walked through the darkened halls, knocking on doors to ensure everyone had been evacuated. When they heard a voice calling for help, they found the elderly woman, who had been unable to hear the evacuation calls due to her hearing impairment.
"In the back of my mind I hoped that everyone was out, so typically when I've walked many empty hallways searching for things, but I've never had anyone yell out help before, sir it was definitely very concerning," said Deputy Martinez.
"Let's get you out of here," Deputy Alkonis responded as they helped her to safety. "I promise I won't, don't worry."
Reflecting on the experience, both deputies expressed how personal the rescue felt. Martinez thought of his own grandmother, hoping she would receive the same care.
"I was thinking about my grandma... Just making sure, reassurance that she's going to be OK," Martinez said.
Sheriff Robert Luna praised the deputies for their courage, stating:
"The deputies' courage and selflessness exemplify the highest standards of law enforcement, and they deserve our deepest respect and gratitude."
Despite an efficient evacuation of nearly 200 residents, two people, including the woman rescued, were left behind. MonteCedro Retirement Community acknowledged the gaps in their evacuation planning and vowed to review their process for future emergencies.
