Golden Retriever Goes from Shelter to Service Dog

A new twist in Ruby's life! The golden retriever went from being left in a shelter to becoming a service dog. Last summer, her original owner left her at the SPCA Roussillon in Canada when the workers noticed the connection she has with people. They contacted the Asista Foundation which is a charity dedicated to rescuing dogs from shelters and training them to become service dogs. Nick Suzuki and his fiancée Caitlin Fitzgerald have been volunteering and supporting Asista for years. The couple helped foster Ruby to make her comfortable and prepare her for what's next. After spending a few days with the golden retriever, the couple realize it felt like the dog had been in their lives for months. Then, she moved in with another temporary foster family and was taught all the basic commands. Next, she learned from Asista's training and intervention team to gain skills that a service dog needs. Asista quickly recognized Ruby's skills and compassion for people so thought she would be great in their new mobile Facility Service Dog Program. This program pairs a dog with a social worker or professional who travels with the animal to different locations to help children and adults with mental health needs. And just like that, Ruby happens to land back with Fitzgerald and Suzuki as her new family and program partner. Ruby is now continuing her training with happiness and brings a sense of calm and comfort to people who need it.
