A beached whale survived the sun on shore for 6 hours before making it back in the ocean with help from the locals. Seldovia, a town in Alaska came together to help the 15-foot minke whale after it landed on the rocks at low tide. Stephen Payton works for the Seldovia Village Tribe as the Environmental Coordinator and responded to the scene. When he arrived, he saw a group of locals forming a bucket line as they poured seawater on the whale's underbelly. They wrapped wet beach towels around it and brainstormed ideas on how to rescue him. Luckily when the tide came back in, the whale was able to be free. Because of the locals' help, the minke whale was able to survive hours longer than excepted. Seldovia Tribe says that moments like these show the powerful connection between the community and nature.
