What’s the ideal time for school to start?

California has become the first state to pass a law mandating that school days start later.

On Sunday, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed off on the bill, which would require public schools in the state to begin no earlier than 8:30am. He says later start times will improve academic performance by allowing students to get more sleep.

But not everyone is happy, including parents whose schedules would be affected by the change and school officials who think start times should be up to the local school district.

The changes are set to go into effect for the 2022/23 school year.
