According to new research, they are now saying that flying during the pandemic might actually be safer than you would think.
Experts are currently highlighting very few documented cases of in-flight transmission of COVID-19. It's been stated that filtration systems on flights circulate air every 2 to 3 minutes with filters that capture over 99% of particles. A statistics professor at MIT, Arnold Barnett, calculated the chances of someone catching COVID with three seats on each side. If everyone wears a mask and the flight is full, your chance is 1 in 4,300.
If middle seats are empty, it would be 1 in 7,700. In order for you to catch the virus while flying, there needs to be a passenger who is contagious and their mask would have to fail to contain the virus, then the person close by would transmit it.
