Seven Hours Sleep Is Ideal Amount in Middle to Old Age.

The ideal amount of sleep per night for middle to old-age people is seven hours. The age group is defined as those between 37 and 73 years old.

Too much or too little sleep was linked to worse cognitive performance and mental health including anxiety and depression.

The researchers' analysis of the data indicated that seven hours of sleep per night was the optimal amount for cognitive performance, such as processing speed, visual attention, memory, and problem-solving skills.

It was also optimal for good mental health, with people experiencing more symptoms of anxiety and depression, and worse overall wellbeing, if they reported sleeping for longer or shorter amounts.

Getting a good night's sleep is important at all stages of life but particularly as people age.

How many hours of sleep do you get on average?
