A tragic shooting in Simi Valley, claimed the lives of Dr. Eric Cordes and his wife, Vicki, outside their home on Sunday. Dr. Cordes, a respected radiologist at Adventist Health Simi Valley, was known for his compassionate service over nearly 30 years. The hospital community is mourning his loss, with colleagues remembering him as a "go-to-radiologist" and a "good quality guy" who was always willing to help.
The shooting occurred around noon, with witnesses reporting an unidentified gunman firing into the couple's garage. The suspect fled the scene in a black Honda Civic. Hours later, police found a burned vehicle and a deceased man near it in Chino, believed to be linked to the crime. Investigators suspect the man died by suicide, but his identity remains unconfirmed due to the condition of the body. A handgun was found near the vehicle, and ballistics tests are underway to determine if it was used in the shooting.
Simi Valley Police Sgt. Rick Morton stated that the attack appeared targeted, and there is no ongoing threat to the public. While speculation suggests the suspect may be a family member, police have not confirmed this. The San Bernardino County coroner is conducting an autopsy to identify the deceased man found in Chino.
The investigation is ongoing, with Simi Valley police working alongside Chino authorities. The community, known for its low crime rate, is in shock over the incident. Dr. Cordes's colleagues and friends continue to express disbelief and sorrow over the loss of a beloved physician and friend.
