Man Tried To Disguise Tortoises As Pastries To Get Through Airport Security

Recently, a 69-year-old man carrying a suspicious package of "desserts", flew from Cairo, Egypt, to Schönefeld Airport in Berlin.

The odd looking package turned out to not be chocolate pastries (which is what the man told customs) but something much more interesting. After opening the package, the customs officers discovered that inside was three Moroccan tortoises!

At least now we know why the man was in such a hurry to get through security and not declare anything! The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora is what protects the tortoises. So, customs confiscated the animals and they were brought to the border veterinarian.

A press release stated that "infringements of species protection regulations can result in fines of up to 50,000 euros" or up to five years in prison.

Lesson learned, don't disguise animals as chocolatey pastries!

Take a look at the photos below.
