Sandy Performs On Her First Cruise- Pics Here!

I am literally writing this blog now from the Miami airport, waiting to board my flight back to home. I've just finished 14 comedy shows aboard the Norwegian Getaway- it was my FIRST cruise and FIRST time performing comedy on a cruise!!! Omg. I was so, SO nervous. Nobody seems to believe me when I say I had panic attacks for weeks leading up to this. I wasn't scared of the cruise itself, I was scared of what it would be like hosting shows for audiences of families. I'm not used to having kids in the crowd. I sometimes (and sometimes often) have a potty mouth. I spent hours on the phone with other cruise comedians....hours trying to prep my material accordingly. But NOTHING compares you to what it's going to be like actually BEING there.

In short, this last week was the most beautiful, terrifying, and exciting week of my life. I met some of the most amazing people on the planet. I bonded with my fellow performers. I saw some BEAUTIFUL places. And I met some wonderful people from all over the country. But not all of it was easy. Here is something I wrote on my FB that puts it into perspective.

"What I’ve learned after performing 13 (out of 14) shows on a cruise-ship:

Hosting is hard. Don’t get me wrong, I am GRATEFUL for this gig and it’s been an amazing experience. But the audiences are predominantly families. Lots of kids ages 6+. That’s new for me.

Some people will come to more than one show. The headliners rotate every other show, but I am there for 14. Needless to say, they’ve seen lots of my stuff and of COURSE I feel guilty about that.

Sometimes the ship sways and that’s just the way it is. Kind of feels like you’re drunk.

The buffet is on deck 15 and there’s also a gym but more importantly the buffet.

You will never be able to predict the “feel” of a show. Every audience is different.

You will leave the ship with more determination to be a better performer, and host.

You will also be slightly bummed your tan isn’t more fierce, but remind yourself to spray tan before next cruise because cute pictures online overshadow everything else. #vanity

All in all, I am happy with how it went, and I am proud of myself. I faced some major fears and performance-related anxieties this trip and have come away with a more intense drive to write, perform, and be an overall better comedian. I am so grateful to all the families that were in the audience, and grateful to Norwegian for this incredible opportunity. Pictures and video below!

P.S. No carbs for a month for me. That buffet did me in.
