Vegan Food Has Arrived For School Lunches

Santa Barbara Unified School District is leading the way in plant-based school nutrition. You can thank the district’s food director, Nancy Weiss and a vegan meat producer.

Since joining the school district in 2008, Weiss has made an effort to revolutionize the cafeteria program and provide healthier and even vegan options for students. Coming from a food background (the involved farming and restaurants) might have helped

The school district is composed of 28 schools with approximately 15,000 students, 65% of which purchase their lunch from the school cafeteria. Weiss has proved that the school cafeteria can be profitable when healthy and vegan. Will other school districts follow the lead? Time will tell.
