Human Options With CEO Maricela Rios

February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness month.

Since 1981, Human Options has been a leader in domestic violence prevention in Orange County. Our mission is to provide safe haven and life changing programs to help abused women, their children and families rebuild their lives, while working with the community to break the cycle of domestic violence. We provide a full continuum of services to stop the violence – from a 24-hour hotline, emergency and transitional living programs, education and prevention presentations and trainings in the community, and low/no cost services including counseling, legal advocacy, children’s therapies, and empowerment classes, offered in six cities in the county.

We have made an enormous impact in southern California—we have counseled and sheltered over 32,000 individuals suffering from domestic violence, responded to more than 70,000 hotline callers and crises, and educated more than 328,000 individuals in our prevention programs.

At least one in four women adult women have experienced physical or sexual violence by an intimate partner. The numbers in Orange County are similar. Domestic violence can affect anyone, regardless of gender, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, and race. Human Options offers a wide variety of services, including counseling, legal advocacy, emergency shelters, educational presentations and more.

Over 70% of our budget is funded by private donations. This support allows us to provide women and children who have experienced abuse with safety, healing, and a way forward. Contributions also fund counseling, legal advocacy, education programs, and elder abuse prevention.
