California won't lift their mask requirement until June15th in order to give the public time to prepare and ensure COVID-19 cases still remain low.
Dr. Mark Ghaly, Health and Human Services Secretary stated "This four-week period will give Californians time to prepare for this change, while we continue the relentless focus on delivering vaccines particularly to underserved communities and those that were hard hit throughout this pandemic."
This reflects Newsom's announcement that if cases remain low, the state will drop all COVID-19 restrictions on June 15th. The CDC guidelines say that all people should still wear masks in crowded indoor locations such as airplanes, buses, hospitals and prisons. On May 3rd, California adopted the CDC's recommendation that people who are fully vaccinated no longer need to wear a mask outdoors unless they are attending crowded gatherings. The state still says that people must wear masks indoors unless they are meeting with other vaccinated people.
