For The Win, a Los Angeles chainlet of smash burger joints that launched during the height of the pandemic, has opened its first San Diego location in Pacific Beach. It’s quickly becoming a favorite among both locals and burger aficionados.
Sides include thin and crispy French fries, sweet potato fries or loaded fries that are topped with grilled onions, two slices of melted American cheese and signature house fry sauce. Brussels sprouts, another popular side option, are deep-fried in beef tallow for added flavor then doused in balsamic vinegar. Desserts include creamy milkshakes and decadent brownies. For vegetarians, a grilled cheese sandwich is also available.
For The Win was born out of both passion and necessity. Santos Uy was enjoying a successful career as the chef-owner of Papilles Bistro, a French restaurant near the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles that earned Michelin Bib Gourmand status and a loyal following. Then came the pandemic and the subsequent lockdowns, and Chef Uy eventually transitioned from serving French fare to creating one of L.A.’s most beloved burger destinations. Having always wanted to serve burgers—really good burgers--he slowly changed begin to transition the existing restaurant bidding farewell to his French bistro and implementing a new name and menu. For The Win – a phrase that implies excellence – was a smash from the start.
